If you have a pond on your property, either natural or man-made you should know the importance of aerating that pond. Most people realize that it is important to aerate a pond that contains fish because the aeration will improve the health and survivability of the fish. What many do not know is that any pond can reap the benefits of aeration. Aeration also eliminates stratification, reduces algae, reduces problem insects, promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria, reduces unwanted bacteria and nutrients, and it also reduces odors. As you can see keeping your pond properly aerated has many benefits, it is good for the overall health of the pond. It also keeps the pond more pleasant looking and smelling.

There are many systems on the market that can be used to aerate a pond, the one that suits your pond the best will depend on the surface size of your pond, the depth of the pond, and if you want to add an aesthetic look to the pond. We will discuss the different aeration products and their pros and cons. The first type we will discuss are windmill aerators, these are usually a diffused aerator that are powered by a windmill. This type of aerator consists of lengths of plastic tubing with an air stone attached to the end of the tube. As air is forced through the tubing the air stone, breaks the air pressure down into tiny bubbles that are then forced into the water. You can run as many lines and air stones as needed to aerate the pond. With a windmill powered diffused aerator, the main advantage is that once the system is installed there is no further cost of running the system since it requires no electricity. The cons are that the windmill itself can be difficult and time consuming to build, then the systems is totally dependent on the wind for power. Most people feel that windmills do not force enough air into the body of water.

The next system is solar powered diffused aerator. They operate on the same principle as the windmill powered systems except that the system is powered by electricity provided by solar panels. Most people prefer solar powered systems to windmill powered systems because they run 24/7 providing more air to the pond. The problem is the amount of sun the solar panels receive, if you have several cloudy days in a row it is possible for the system to stop due to a lack of power. When it comes to diffused aerator systems most people prefer electrically powered aerators because they run continuously and can be purchased in models that can add as much air as the pond requires. For a small pond, you can purchase a 110-volt system or for larger bodies of water you can buy larger systems that operate on 220 volts.

A healthy pond with aeration.

The rest of the most common aeration systems all run on electricity. The next choice is a high volume surface aerator. This type of aerator operates on top of the pond and pumps water, not air, through the system, which vigorously churns the water at the surface. The churning motion effectively aerates a shallow pond; this type of system is a great system for ponds that are 5 feet or less in depth. Fountain aerators are one of the most popular types of pond aeration systems. These types of aeration systems are very efficient and they add an aesthetic look to your pond. They can be purchased in types that spray water in various decorative patterns and some models feature decorative lighting. This type of system works by pulling water from below the surface of the pond then spraying it into the air. As the water droplets move through the air, they grab oxygen molecules that are then carried back to the top of the pond. These systems are ideal for aerating the entire pond from the surface to the bottom. They can be used in any depth of pond.

In conclusion, the best aeration system is an electrically powered diffused aerator because if properly installed this type of system will efficiently aerate the entire pond no matter the size or depth. This type of system is also less expensive to operate due to its efficiency. The drawback is that there is no aesthetic value. The second best choice is the fountain aerator. This type of system also effectively aerates ponds and you also get the benefit of the beauty that is provided by the fountain. The least effective system is the surface aerator, but if your pond is shallow, this may be your best choice. Surface aerators are also good if you have concerns about floating nuisance plants.

Doesn’t a pond, natural or man-made, look a bit strange and a bit sad without pond plants? Like any other garden, aquatic plants can add splashes of color to a water garden. There are different types of pond plants, with different needs. Some are floating plants, some like only damp roots, and others have to grow in at least 20 inches of water. Plants can be thoroughly submerged or have just their leaves floating on the water, like the water lilies or water hyacinth. Some have huge leaves, and some have leaves that are spiky. Some grow horizontally and others grow upright, and it’s the contrast of the aquatic plants’ habits, colors and shapes that can make a well planned water garden very dramatic.

Before the gardener decides what plants they want to use, they should know where the plant is going to grow and how deep the soil and water will be. Some marginal plants like sagittaria may need to be put on a shelf in the pond, and other plants can be put in containers that can be set on bricks if they need to be in a certain depth of water. Containers for pond plants are specially made. They have open lattice sides and are dark so they can’t be seen under the water. Bog plants like alisma, a perennial with pretty white and pink flowers, or water hawthorn or bulrushes can be planted in damp soil at the pondside.

Submerged plants that add oxygen to the water, called oxygenators, can be planted in loam. Some of these plants are elodea, or Canadian pondweed, potamogeton, which looks like seaweed and water starwort, which can be completely submerged or grown in shallow water.
The gardener should also consider the pond ecosystem. Koi can do well in ponds but ducks will most likely destroy decorative plants. Also, some plants, like water hyacinth, can become invasive.

Sagittaria

Bulrushes

The best time of year to plant most aquatic plants is in early to late spring. By winter they’ll be established enough to survive the cold weather, though tropical plants like some of the water lilies and water hyacinths will have to be protected indoors.

The gardener has to be careful when they fill the pond after placing the plants there. The shock of cold water on top of the shock of being transplanted can kill a plant. The pond should be filled slowly to a level just deep enough to cover the crown of the plants. This should be left for a few days, and then more water can be added. The water shouldn’t flow too quickly because it might disturb the mud on the bottom of the pond. If the pond is already full, the plants can be lowered slowly into the water by placing them first on a stack of bricks, then removing the bricks one at a time over days. The pond ecosystem might take as long as a season to really establish itself, but the gardener should resist emptying out the pond to clean it, since this means the cycle has to start all over again.

After a while their fully functioning pond, with its beautiful plants and animals, will give a gardener years of enjoyment.

Because this is the most important piece of equipment for your fish pond, you will want to give serious consideration to the fish pond pump that you choose. You will want to choose from an array of pumps that provides the best circulation of your pond. This is because the circulation of the water throughout your fish pond is the primary reason for having a pump in the first place.

A pump is necessary to circulate water through the ponds filtration system. As koi breathe they secrete ammonia which can quickly build up in a backyard pond and make your fish sick. This ammonia must be removed; and biological filtration is one of the most common ways of doing so. As pond water is pumped through a biological filter the ammonia in the water is converted into nitrates. These nitrates are then removed from the water by pond plants. This is known as the nitrogen Cycle.

If you have any type of water fall or water fountain, you will need to be sure to choose a fish pond pump that will provide enough water pressure to push the water through this decorative accessories. In addition, in order to adequately protect all of the accessories that you have in your fish pond, you will need to have a skimmer installed. However, your skimmer must be of an adequate size in order to handle the amount of water that your pump generates.

When checking for the best type of fish pond pumps, you need to calculate how far away your pump will be located from the accessory that it needs to push the water through. You will also need to keep in mind the amount of water the fish pond pump will need to push to your accessory as well. You can check the specifications on the pump that you wish to purchase to ensure that it is rated for the distance as well as for the volume of water that you need.

Another consideration that you need to keep in mind when you are choosing fish pond pumps is the amount of energy that such a device will use. You will be running your pump all day as well as all night long. For this reason, it is important to search for an energy efficient pond pump. In doing so, you will likely reduce your overall energy costs throughout the pond season.

However, proper maintenance is require to keep it looking beautiful and making sure it adds to the beauty of the landscape. One thing about ponds is that the water can get murky when it just sits stagnant. It needs to be circulated so it remains clear and beautiful with a pond water pump.

Clean, clear-looking water is only one benefit of utilizing pond water pumps. Circulating the pond water oxygenates the pond which aids in keeping fish alive and maintaining proper amounts of healthy bacteria. This way your beautiful water feature keeps its appeal all the time.

The best way to get these benefits from a pond water pump is to know what kind and size you need for your water feature. For instance a small pond may only require an inexpensive submersible pump to keep the water circulating while keeping algae at bay and the water aerated well. These are the easiest to install and can cover a range between 50 to 50,000 gallons per hour. It’s not likely most water features will need quite that much as commonly a pump that can handle 350 to 4000 gallons per minute should suffice. The kind of pump is important as proper circulation of the water in your water feature is important no only to the fish in it, but also the underwater plants.

External pond water pumps are typically more energy efficient to use as long as you stick to the ones specifically made for ponds and not spas or pools. The benefits of using the external pump include ease of cleaning, less clogging, easy hookup drains and skimmers and they are easier to repair.

Other considerations when you are shopping for pond water pumps include:

How high will the water need to be lifted?
Is there a statuary, fountain or waterfall?
Are there filters?

You also need to get all the information about the proper use of pond pumps since there are many things to factor in when you use one all year long. Winter time is a crucial time for water features, so be sure to learn as much as you can and use your pond water pond properly. No matter what kind of water feature you have, a pond pump can help keep it nice year round as long as you choose the right one.

Backyard fish ponds require pumps for ponds. There are a number of reasons why you need to invest in this type of equipment for your backyard pond. A pump for pond is necessary to ensure that you have the proper and necessary water flow throughout your pond. Without good water flow, you will risk having stagnant water in your pond. If the water become stagnant, you risk having insect, such as mosquitoes, inhabit your pond. You will also likely find that your water will begin to smell unpleasantly. You might even notice some algae or other green or brown substance growing in, or on top of, your pond.

Another reason why pumps are necessary is to help ensure the health of any fish that you might have in your pond. Without the pump in pond it can be difficult to make sure that the pond itself is healthy enough to support the wild life. The primary way that you can check that your pump in pond is working efficiently is by making sure that it’s circulating the water at the bottom of the pond toward the top. This circulation enables the water to become thoroughly aerated so that all of the fish have more oxygen. Having a better source of oxygen will help to ensure that both your water plants as well as your fish are healthy.

If you have features in your pond such as a waterfall or a fountain, you will need to purchase a pump for pond that is of a higher capacity. This is necessary because of the amount of water pressure that is needed to propel the water against gravity and up into the fountain or waterfall area. The size of the pumps for ponds that are needed for your particular pond depends on factors such as how big your pond is. In addition, you will need a larger horsepower pump if you have more than one fountain or water fall. For these instances, you might want to consider purchasing a pump for each decorative feature in order to ensure that the water is still circulated if one pump fails.

There’s something truly magical about water. Whether it’s a small, peaceful pond, or a waterfall that catches the brilliance of the sunlight, water features are a wonderful, magical addition to any garden or landscaping project. And as the best landscapers and gardeners can tell you, the key to creating a really special water feature is designing it so people see only the beauty, not the effort behind it. And in the case of water features, the primary “effort” behind it is the behind the scene action (or more accurately under the water action) of the pumps.

Whether you are planning creating a fountain, waterfall, stream, pond, statuary or other water feature, it’s important to choose the right pump. Because there are so many brands of pond pumps out there, unfortunately we can’t focus on all of them. But we can take a look at the various types of Pondmaster pumps, and detail what type of pond application each is ideal for.
